Deliver Wow?

If I told you that one of Obtiva's values is to Deliver Wow you might roll your eyes and think "whatever that means". Admittedly I often have to explain what we mean by Deliver Wow.

Let's begin by considering the idea that Software Development is a service, not a product. As a consulting company it is easy to think of what we do as a product, but that would be a mistake. Our clients don't simply consume the code we write. In fact, our clients actually experience a process of collaboration. Our success or failure depends on that experience far more than the quality or amount of code we write (though quality impacts the experience too).

I suspect that most internal software development teams don't think of themselves as providing a product *or* a service. They just do their job. But ultimately, success or failure for them is also highly influenced by how their colleagues experience working with them.

The key distinction is products are consumed, services are experienced. If you provide a service you must pay close attention to the experience.

For a software development team, Deliver Wow means paying attention to the experience. It means thinking deeply about what it is like to collaborate with you. It means focusing on relationships and process. It means managing expectations. It means caring more about delivering great business value than even the business stakeholders do. It means stepping outside of your defined role to do things that are remarkable.
